What you really need to start training the press
There’s many myths around what you need to begin press to handstand training.
Some say you need incredible flexibility like a flat pancake, yet the tuck press doesn’t use any of that range.
Others say you need minutes of handstand endurance, but there are people who can press before they can balance a freestanding handstand!
But because these myths persist, people will chase arbitrary goals for years that don’t get them any closer to the press.

In our experience coaching thousands since 2018, these are the three traits we have found necessary to achieve the press:
- The specific shoulder strength to shift the weight onto your hands.
- The compression strength that will help you shorten the trajectory of the press, making it easier.
- The coordination of hips, shoulders and spinal articulation in a press.
These traits are integral to the press. And by training them with our targeted exercises, they’ll help you break through the limitations have kept you from achieving the press.

– Michal T.
“[My wall presses] are feeling better! I can finally feel my hip flexors working, and it feels like I’m doing a better job at keeping my low back from arching.”
– Elin H.
Your Handbalancing Instructors
Mikael Kristiansen and Emmet Louis are both international teachers of handbalancing and flexibility and have spent big chunks of their lives studying and understanding all aspects of these skills professionally both as performers and teachers. With Handstand Factory, they now want to demystify and simplify the process of learning handstands, and make it accessible to anyone wanting to learn to stand on their hands.
