“Stand. Still, calm, composed, balanced. This is the essence of standing, and establishing these qualities first in your physical practice is of the upmost importance. Without this solid foundation, any other training will not build your body up, but cause it to quickly crumble.”

FROM THE STAND MANUAL

The Origins of Stand

This program came into being to address the debilitating effects the general population has suffered through not being able to stand. We believe the “sitting epidemic” stems in part from people lacking proper, comprehensive standing technique and practice. And for those who need to stand at work, poor joint stacking and muscle imbalances while standing exacerbate the wear and tear from physically demanding jobs. To address this global health crisis, we’ve made the Stand program free, our gift to you. So stand up for your health, and you’ll quickly see the holistic health benefits of the two-leg freestanding foot stand.

OUR APPROACH TO FOOT STANDING

Our program teaches foot standing using a technique that is expansive – it leads to a structure that is efficient and elegant and can be used to develop towards the higher level skills such as walking, lunging, squatting, and later even the one-legged foot balance. There are many different styles of standing out there, some may balance in an arch, some may balance in a wide stance – these are all valid in their respective contexts and usages. This program, however, teaches the upright two-legged foot stand from a combination of common sense with alternative strategies of developing awareness and coordination right side up.

Who’s Teaching

Mikael Kristiansen and Emmet Louis are both international teachers of handbalancing and flexibility and have spent big chunks of their lives studying and understanding all aspects of these skills professionally both as performers and teachers. Despite this, they actually spend most of their time standing on their feet, and are quite adept at it! They also realize many handbalancers also balance on their feet, yet while there are many handstand programs online for this community, no one has properly programmed how to foot stand for them. Using their platform, Handstand Factory, Emmet and Mikael are finally meeting this need with Stand. To learn more about Handstand Factory, head over to our about page.

FAQ

I already know how to stand, why should I do this program?

But do you really? are you sure you never fall over? if you haven’t actually trained standing, how can you be sure you can do it?

How long can I use the Stand program?

The program is complete when you’ve achieved a consistent, stacked two-legged foot stand that you are happy with, but you can use the program as long as you want. You get lifetime access to the program, with any future updates that happen so until the internet breaks, it’s all yours. It will be handy to go back if you ever want to tighten up your posture.

Do I need a training partner to do the Stand program?

Nope, the way that the Stand program is designed means there is no need for a partner and that everything can be done independently. Saying that, standing around with others is a common way to socialize, so you’ll gain some extra benefits from training with friends!

I've mastered standing, what's next?

Once you’ve successfully graduated this in-depth course on how to stand, you can now begin carefully training towards standing on one leg. Holding on to a railing can be a helpful progression here.

Help! I've fallen and I can't get up!

Don’t fret! Our pre-requisite strength and mobility drills in the Stand program cover how to safely stand up from both lying down and from a seated position. These drills will give you controlled motor patterns to safely bail out of your foot stand if your balance starts to waiver.

What equipment will I need to train the Stand program?

The program is designed for minimalist training – you’ll need even ground (standing on a slope can be tricky when you are learning), and we recommend shoes if you want to train on gravel, but it is not a must.
