Safely Exit a Handstand

Falling out of a handstand can be scary!

After all, we’re upside-down, discombobulated, and struggling against our very nature in some important respects.

But we’ll let you in on a secret, EVERYONE who handstands falls, literally every time. As far as we know there’s no one who went into a handstand and permanently gave up using their feet, staying perpetually on their hands. Experienced handbalancers merely transition their fall into a graceful shift to their feet.

You too can learn to safely, comfortably exit a handstand.  That’s why we made this free Bail training session. It contains the approachable, overlooked bailing drills and the coaching concepts we’ve given hundreds thousands of people to control their handstand exit.

Cartwheel Out with Control and Grace

The shortcoming of many handbalancing teachers and methods is they don’t graduate the skill of falling in the same way they gradually progress other elements of handbalancing.

You don’t have to start with a freestanding handstand to roll or a plie out. Yet these tamer progressions seem to be underutilized.

What are those tamer progressions? Cartwheels out of handstand. Now the cartwheels do not need to look clean and fancy at first. They might be crooked, feel heavy and uncoordinated but that is fine – because the aspect we are focused on is lowering your feet back to the ground.

While it looks dynamic, the cartwheel is the easiest bail to learn: you can see the ground the whole time, you can learn it on the wall, and you can progress it’s verticality incrementally.

And in the Bail session, we do just that.  Your first cartwheels might be slanted with bent legs, but the drills included will build that up to a vertical, freestanding exit from a handstand.

Prerequisites

You do not need a whole lot of experience with handstands to start this type of work, but to work directly on the bailing drills it will be very beneficial be able to do the prerequisites below:

  • Consistent 20-30 seconds chest to wall handstand
  • Back to wall handstand with some ability to balance without the wall

Your Handbalancing Instructors

Mikael Kristiansen and Emmet Louis are both international teachers of handbalancing and flexibility and have spent big chunks of their lives studying and understanding all aspects of these skills professionally both as performers and teachers. With Handstand Factory, they now want to demystify and simplify the process of learning handstands, and make it accessible to anyone wanting to learn to stand on their hands.
